The Kome Kimono (click for slide deck) is a wearable tribute to the ingenuity of Hawai‘i’s plantation workers, who once transformed rice bags into everyday clothing during times of scarcity. In the early 20th century, Japanese immigrants and plantation families repurposed rice sacks from brands like Tsuru Mai, Kokeshi Rice, and Botan into garments, weaving resilience and creativity into Hawai‘i’s cultural fabric.
Artist Jasper Wong reimagines these nostalgic rice bag designs into a bold modern kimono. The exterior features hand drawn crane motifs, a symbol of longevity, peace, and hope in Japanese tradition. Subtle kokeshi doll elements pay homage to handcrafted figures that embody joy and protection. Accents of the rose recall hanakotoba, the Japanese language of flowers, where the red rose speaks of passion — a fitting symbol for the spirit of Jiu Jitsu.
Inside, the kimono reveals a reversible tortoise shell lining, intertwined with re illustrated Kikkoman patterns. This detail honors the Japanese fable The Crane and the Turtle, a timeless story of friendship, endurance, and harmony.
We pushed innovation with this drop. Sourcing a brand new canvas fabric never before used on a kimono, we layered Jasper’s artwork through sublimation and added embroidered highlights to key elements of the design. The result is a breathtaking combination of texture and depth, something truly never seen before in a kimono. The factory spent countless hours creating each piece individually, hand crafting each one to follow Jasper’s design, making every kimono unique.
